How to start on with Linux

Having used windows over 17 years now shifting to Linux seems very hard. But is not as hard as it gets if you have the right start .In my opinion the right way to start learning Linux is having a virtual machine software like virtual box by sun and download the latest version of Ubuntu  .
The main benefit of working in a virtual environment that your current working operating system is not effected even if Linux crashes. So u can work around your way to learning the OS without really worrying about the problems u might encounter in the \process as even if it does all u need to do is install a fresh version over it. So it gives a good carefree start towards working your way towards learning Linux.
As for Ubuntu , it is the most windows type UI that u could get and more over in its functionality is very windows type. In the sense you easily brows through software compatible with your version of ubuntu and install them very conveniently and also use them to get a feel of the whole thing.

In a matter of time u will install it in your main system and u will realize all your work is done in Linux except for some basic patented work that is carried out specifically in Windows.
